2.8 million meals collected!

29th July 2016

Thank you for helping us feed people this summer!

From the 30th June to 2nd July all UK Tesco stores hosted a food collection for either a Trussell Trust foodbank or our partner charity, FareShare, to help stop UK hunger.

During this eighth Neighbourhood Food Collection, generous communities nationwide have provided food for a fantastic 2.8 million meals to help struggling individuals and families this summer. This means that since the Neighbourhood Food Collection began in 2012, more than 36 million meals have been collected.

Tesco also top-up customer donations by making a 20% financial contribution to us, meaning the collection has not only provided vital food for UK people experiencing crisis, but funds will help Trussell Trust foodbanks develop their services and provide important support, beyond food, to tackle the root causes of poverty.

David McAuley, Trussell Trust Chief Executive said: “We want to say a massive thank you to everyone who participated in this summer’s Neighbourhood Food Collection. Unavoidable circumstances such as illness, redundancy or an unexpected bill can all leave people facing hunger and needing help from a foodbank. In communities up and down the country parents are skipping meals to feed their children, which is why the incredible generosity shown by Tesco customers, store staff and volunteers is so valuable; it enables Trussell Trust foodbanks across the UK to be there to provide emergency food and support when anyone is hit by crisis.”

We are thrilled that the UK’s largest supermarket shares our vision that no one should go hungry, and is working with us to empower local communities and fight poverty.
